We are pleased to share with you that Seattle Children’s received the certificate of need today from the Washington State Department of Health, approving a total of 121 additional licensed beds (100 acute pediatric care and 21 psychiatric beds) on the hospital campus.

This wonderful news comes at a time when we are seeing rapid growth in our patient care volume which has put a strain on our existing facilities, and at times has required us to divert patients needing our care to other hospitals. While we have effectively used continuous performance improvement to improve efficiency and maximize our space to accommodate as many patients as possible, our current rate of growth requires us to prepare now to meet future need.

The first 60 to 80 additional inpatient beds will be in service in 2013 with the opening of the first phase of the Building Hope: Cancer and Critical Care Expansion. This first building also provides space for a kitchen, service dock, and an improved emergency department.
