In this installment of Inside the Walls, we’d like to share some important details about the sky bridges that will connect five levels of Building Hope to the Train zone of the existing hospital. During sky bridge construction – beginning this October – parts of levels 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the Train zone will close as the bridges are punched through.
The closures will require four different units to temporarily lose a few beds each. Two of those units – the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit/Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PICU/CICU) – will move to Building Hope when it opens in spring 2013. The other two units are the Inpatient Psychiatric Unit (IPU) and a Medical Unit.
Both the SCCA and the PICU/CICU will gain much needed capacity when they move. In the meantime, Children’s will offset the temporary loss of PICU/CICU beds during sky bridge construction.
Once Building Hope opens, we’ll renovate the Train zone spaces vacated by the SCCA and PICU/CICU so the IPU and Medical and Surgical units can grow. The completion of Building Hope will increase Children’s overall capacity from 254 to 278 beds.
