Our Inside the Walls of Building Hope series wouldn’t be complete without mentioning our Livable Streets initiative. Besides improving traffic flow around the hospital, the initiative will make the neighborhood more walkable and bikeable, providing healthy alternatives to driving that will help people stay active and reduce pollution.
We selected six projects to build in the first phase of the initiative starting this summer. In addition we have committed to a centerpiece for these projects – a new traffic signal and redesigned intersection at 40th Avenue NE and Sand Point Way NE. The intersection will include three new crosswalks and a video detection system that will make crossing four lanes of traffic safer and easier.
Project highlights: a new connection between the 40th Avenue NE/Sand Point Way NE intersection and the Burke Gilman Trail. Design begins this fall with trail construction to begin after Building Hope opens in the spring.
Additional street improvements that we have committed to include building a new sidewalk and a two-way cycle track that will run alongside Sand Point Way NE – giving bicyclists and pedestrians their own travel lanes.
In addition, we’re funding two projects being built by Seattle Department of Transportation contractors this summer. New sidewalks along NE 50th Street and curb extensions at 40th Avenue NE and NE 50th Street will create a safer and more attractive connection between the hospital, Ronald McDonald house and the Burke-Gilman Trail. A two-mile greenway on 39th Avenue NE will slow traffic on this quiet neighborhood street and and make biking and walking connections to schools, parks and the trail safer and easier to find.
