Bike and pedestrian improvements are front and center in our Livable Streets Initiative – a $4 million plan to make Northeast Seattle a safer and more convenient place to travel for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists alike. Two examples are a new sidewalk we completed on the north side of NE 50th Street and a cycletrack we’re building on the east side of Sand Point Way NE.
The new sidewalk on NE 50th Street includes curb bulbs on the northwest and northeast corners of the intersection with 40th Avenue NE to shorten the long crossing. The northeast curb bulb is extended to accommodate a Metro bus stop. The improvements create a safer and more attractive connection between the hospital, Ronald McDonald House and the nearby Burke Gilman Trail.
The Sand Point Way cycletrack will run in front of the Seattle Children’s campus between Penny Drive and a new traffic signal at 40th Avenue NE – currently under construction. The 10-foot wide cycletrack will feature separate lanes for each direction. We expect to finish the cycletrack and an adjacent sidewalk early next year, enabling pedestrians and cyclists to travel between the two entrances to the hospital – and eventually reach the Burke Gilman Trail via a ramp we plan to build west of the traffic signal near the Hartmann Building.
