On Wednesday, Sept. 5, crews will remove some vegetation from the west side of Helen Lane at the hospital. This work will be performed using a boom lift placed in the River parking lot, north of the elevator to the River entrance. Four parking stalls in the River lot will be closed to accommodate the boom lift. Moderate levels of noise will be created from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. that day.

On Tuesday, Sept. 4, crews will add new striping on Helen Lane at the hospital for traffic and parking control. The striping is expected to take only one day. Initial work will begin at 6 a.m., but construction noise will not be generated until 8 a.m. The new paint will cause some minor odors. This task will be complete by 6 p.m. on Sept. 4.
On Thursday, Sept. 6, construction crews will begin excavating for new sign foundations near the River entrance. This work will include saw cutting and drilling concrete; a vacuum truck will also be used during this stage. Helen Lane and the River entrance will remain open. Flaggers and spotters will be used to assist with vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
The saw cutting, drilling and vacuuming will generate noise, and some minor odors may be created as well. These activities will occur from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6; Friday, Sept. 7; and Monday, Sept. 10. No work associated with the sign foundations will take place on the weekend.

On Aug. 21, the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 302 went on strike against the Associated General Contractors of Washington. The strike is ongoing and is affecting Seattle Children’s construction sites. This will impact the dates of some tasks listed in previous Construction Blog posts, such as the new driveway to 40th Avenue at the hospital. Once the strike is over, work on the delayed tasks will resume as soon as possible, and we will post updates on the blog once new work dates are defined. In the meantime, work that does not rely on members of Local 302 is continuing. Stay tuned to the Construction Blog for details.
On Monday, Aug. 27, a portion of Lot 1 at the hospital campus will be sandblasted in order to prepare the area for restriping. The sandblasting will occur on the lowest level of the parking garage. Noise will be generated from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. that day, but the impact to neighbors is expected to be minimal. Contact [email protected] if you have questions or concerns.
Seattle Children’s Research Institute will celebrate a milestone on Aug. 30 — the topping out of Building Cure, a new research building under construction at 1920 Terry Ave. Seattle Children’s is hosting a private event that day that includes a beam-signing ceremony and lunch for staff and the construction and project teams. The beam will be raised around 12:45 p.m. Up to 1,000 attendees are expected.

Beginning Aug. 24, construction crews will close and fence off the area between the hospital and 40th Avenue. The existing Emergency Department (ED) driveway will be narrowed by the fence placement. Once the fence is up, crews will remove the on-site hard surfaces (such as the walkways and the old smoking shelter pad) and will also install protection measures for on-site trees and utilities. This work, which will take place from Aug. 24 to Aug. 31, is the next step in a larger, phased project to construct a modified ED drop-off area in preparation for Building Care construction.
The sidewalk on 40th Avenue will remain open during this stage of work. The fence will remain in place for the future phases happening over the next few months.
This work will occur from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25. Normal levels of construction noise are anticipated.

Modular buildings located on Seattle Children’s hospital campus are being dismantled and removed in sections via Penny Drive from now through Aug. 20. The dismantling will take place Mondays through Fridays, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; dismantling work will not occur on weekends.
The physical move of modular sections down Penny Drive will take place as follows: one at 1:30 p.m. and one at 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays; and multiple moves from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays. No work will occur on Sundays. Transporting modular sections down Penny Drive should not cause significant delays, but if we experience traffic congestion, the Ocean garage exit to NE 45th Street may be opened for a brief time to prevent delays to patient and family departures.

From Aug. 15 to Aug. 24, a portion of sidewalk on the east side of 40th Avenue NE, between the existing Emergency Department (ED) driveway and the Metro route 65 bus stop, will be closed as construction crews build a new ED driveway. This work is the first phase of a larger, phased project to construct a modified ED drop-off area.
Pedestrians will have two options for safely maneuvering around the construction zone:
Please be safe and use only designated pedestrian paths and crosswalks.
Additionally, the landscape island within the existing ED driveway will be removed during that same period. The existing ED driveway will remain open.
This work will occur from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18. Normal levels of construction noise are anticipated.

Crews will build and install vestibules at the Emergency Department (ED) and River entrances on Seattle Children’s hospital campus. The vestibules are being installed in preparation for construction of Building Care and will help remove dust and soil from people entering the hospital.
The ED vestibule will be built in the Forest service drive area (near the southwest corner of the hospital) between July 24 and Aug. 8, then installed at the ED entrance between Aug. 9 and Aug. 14. All work to build the vestibule will take place between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. weekdays, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays; normal construction noise levels are anticipated. On Thursday, Aug. 9, construction crews will move the vestibule into place at the ED entrance with a forklift from 5 to 7 a.m.; the forklift will create minimal noise. This early time period was chosen to minimize disruption to patients and families using the ED entrance. Once in place, installation of the vestibule will continue through Aug. 14 during standard working hours. The ED entrance will remain open during installation.
Work on the River vestibule will take place between July 26 and Aug. 7. To minimize hospital access impacts, the River entrance work will occur at night, between 8:30 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. weekday nights. Construction lights will be used at the River entrance, and minimal construction noise levels are anticipated. We do not expect noise or lights to impact the hospital’s neighbors.

From Wednesday, Aug. 8, to Friday, Sept. 14, construction crews will modify Helen Lane at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Helen Lane is the road that serves the hospital’s River entrance.
The purpose of this work is to straighten Helen Lane, which will then serve as the new hub for Seattle Children’s workforce shuttles. Portions of the existing curb along Helen Lane will be removed so the road can be straightened, then new curb will be poured. Some work will also occur around the traffic circle near the River entrance. Helen Lane and the River entrance will remain open during construction.
Normal levels of construction noise are anticipated. Work will occur between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays.
