Upcoming Building Care Construction Activities: Feb. 4 to Feb. 10

Building Care construction is underway. From now until building opening in Spring 2022, there will be ongoing construction activity at the hospital campus. Seattle Children’s will publish a weekly post on this Construction Blog that outlines the work expected to occur the following week. We will also post to this blog whenever a construction activity will be especially impactful to neighbors.

From Feb. 4 to Feb. 10, construction crews are scheduled to perform the following activities:

  • Form concrete curbs
  • Demolish, saw cut and remove asphalt
  • Utilities: install water pipes; cut and cap existing stormwater pipes
  • Prepare dirt pads for drill rigs
  • Drill piles
  • Internal activities: plumbing and pipe installation; install firestop systems and seismic restraints; conduct pressure tests and inspections

Construction noise will be generated throughout the week. The noisiest work will be drilling for the piles (scheduled all week) and the asphalt demolition and saw cutting, which is scheduled for Feb. 7.

All work will take place within standard construction hours: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Tree Pruning Along Sand Point Way on Feb. 6

On Feb. 6, Bartlett Tree Experts will prune trees along Sand Point Way NE between Springbrook Professional Center and the former Wells Fargo building (at the corner of 40th Avenue NE and Sand Point Way). The pruning will make Seattle Children’s Emergency Department sign more visible to motorists.

This work will take place from 8 a.m. to noon. The sidewalk will be closed in the work vicinity during those hours. Chainsaws and chippers will be used, which will generate noise. Contact Lisa King at 206-510-8481 if you have questions.

Storm Drain Cleaning and Inspection at Hospital, Jan. 24

Construction crews will clean and inspect a newly-installed stormwater drain with a vacuum truck and a camera truck on Thursday, Jan. 24 from 8 to 11 a.m. The trucks will access the site via the paved fire lane that connects to NE 45th Street and runs between the Forest and River buildings. Spotters will be used for pedestrian safety at NE 45th Street and within Seattle Children’s property.

This work will occur outside the fenced construction area, and the vacuum truck will be noisy. Please call 206-987-8000 or email [email protected] if you have questions.

Revised Parking Restrictions on 40th Avenue NE Due to Safety Concerns

Due to maneuvering conflicts between construction trucks and buses, parking will no longer be allowed on the east side of 40th Avenue NE between NE 45th Street and the Seattle Children’s ambulance driveway. Buses and trucks are not able to use 40th Avenue NE at the same time when parking is allowed on both sides of the street, which creates an unsafe situation. Three stalls-worth of parking space in that location were already marked as no parking; this change will convert the remaining two stalls to no parking.

To mitigate for this additional parking restriction, two parking spaces on the west side of 40th Avenue NE near the old Wells Fargo building that had previously been marked as no parking are now being returned to public parking. This means there is no net loss of on-street parking.

Safety is our top priority. This change will make travel safer on 40th Avenue NE for everyone. Please call 206-987-8000 or email [email protected] if you have questions.

Terry Avenue Adjacent to Building Cure to Be Closed to Vehicles Through May for Green Street Construction

Beginning Jan. 14, Terry Avenue, between Stewart and Virginia Streets, will be closed to vehicular traffic to construct the new Terry Avenue Green Street. The closure is expected to last through May 2019. During this time we will construct new sidewalks, repave to add access points/drop-off zones, create new planter beds and landscaping, and add a number of pedestrian benches and activation points. Also beginning Jan. 14, normal working hours at Building Cure shift so all work and deliveries begin at 6 a.m. This will last for the duration of the viaduct closure. The exception is civil work on Terry Avenue, which will begin at 7 a.m.
