Livable Streets is Seattle Children’s commitment to improving neighborhood transportation and making our streets safer as the hospital continues to grow. With this initiative, we’re dedicating nearly $4 million towards pedestrian, bicycle, and other transportation projects in Northeast Seattle over a 20-year time span.

This Friday, January 23, work will begin early on building the first set of mechanical pads for the new HVAC units located on Levels 4 and 5 of the Forest zone. A pump truck is schedule to arrive at Seattle Children’s at 8 a.m. followed shortly thereafter by the arrival of a concrete truck.

This month, multiple projects are taking place at Seattle Children’s as we continue to expand and improve our facilities. As a result, you will see an increase in construction activity around the hospital campus in the coming weeks.
The projects include relocation to our ophthalmology clinic located on the southeast portion of our campus; construction of an exterior porch and patio in conjunction with the new Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine Unit; and build out on three floors in the Forest zone. Read full post »
On Thursday, Seattle Parks and Recreation was notified about a blue-green algae present at the Magnuson Park Dog Beach. The algae substance is currently being testing by the Washington Department of Ecology to determine if it is toxic.
Until this issue is resolved, it is very important to keep your pets away from the dog beach and the water. Algal blooms that are toxic can poison animals, wildlife, and people. Read full post »
Today, November 21, we will be bringing in a crane and large steel beams as part of our continuing construction. A large semi-truck will arrive with the crane around 6:00 a.m. and from that time until 8:00 a.m. the crane will be unloaded.
The truck will enter Seattle Children’s at the access road located at the intersection of NE 45th and 42nd NE on the south side of the hospital, between our Forest and River Zones. You may hear back beeper noise from the truck during this time frame.
Next, the large steel beams will arrive by truck around 8:00 a.m., with the truck entering through the same access road. Flaggers will be present at the intersection to direct the truck in and the street will be blocked for a few minutes as the truck is positioned for entry.

Seattle Children’s new Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine Unit (PBMU) officially opened on level 5 of the River/Mountain zone, with patients from the existing unit on level 4 of the River zone moving into the new PBMU facilities. The remodeled space includes 25 single-patient rooms, a classroom, dining area, group rooms, and several other amenities for supporting the health and well-being of patients, families and staff. The Children’s bike share station opened this afternoon in connection with the city-wide launch of Pronto Cycle Share, Seattle’s new cycle sharing system. The station at Children’s holds 29 docking spaces and is one of 50 bike share stations located across the city.
Pronto makes available 500 bicycles year round for the public to use as a transportation option and is intended for short, quick trips within the city. At each station, users who purchase short-term passes or annual memberships can access or return bicycles and also check out free helmets.
As part of the program launch, Pronto will offer guided weekend tours beginning this Saturday in Capitol Hill. Also, in partnership with Pronto, Cascade Bicycle Club is offering free introductory classes to the public covering the basics of urban bicycling. One of those classes will take place at Children’s at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 15.
The docking spaces for a bike share station at Seattle Children’s will be installed at 10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27. The work, which will take place off Phil Smart Way next to the transit stop, is expected to last less than two hours and create minimal noise.
The Children’s station is one of 50 bike share stations being completed as part of a citywide network dubbed Pronto that will open Oct. 13. The network will make available 500 bikes for rent. The hospital station will consist of 29 docking spaces where staff, visitors and the community can hop on and drop off bikes.

We moved the date of a 6 a.m. concrete pour to Wednesday, Aug. 27, because there weren’t enough concrete finishers available on the original date.

Work begins on Tuesday, Aug. 19, to build a new bike share station near the Sand Point Way NE bus stop in front of Seattle Children’s. Pouring the concrete pad will require a 6 a.m. start on Aug. 19 only because concrete deliveries start early. Normal work hours will be 8 a.m.-5 p.m. through the end of the month.
All work will be staged from Phil Smart Sr. Way within the hospital campus. The bike share station is part of a citywide bike share program. When complete, the Seattle Children’s station will make available up to 26 bicycles for staff, visitors and neighbors to rent.
