New Rooftop Helistop to Be Activated Oct. 17

On Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 7 a.m., Seattle Children’s will officially activate the new helicopter landing pad (helistop) on top of the Friends of Costco Building (also known as Forest A). The rooftop will serve as the hospital’s sole helistop until Building Care opens in 2022. The existing ground helistop will be permanently deactivated at 7 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 19. Helicopter landings will continue to occur on an as-needed basis in emergency medical situations.

Construction Entrance Installation on Sand Point Way From Oct. 22 to Oct. 31

From Oct. 22 to Oct. 31, crews will install a construction entrance into the hospital property from northbound Sand Point Way NE to prepare for the construction of Building Care. The construction entrance will be located just south of the existing Metro route 75 bus stop (#10562) between 40th Avenue NE and Penny Drive; construction vehicles will use this entrance while Building Care is built.

The right lane of northbound Sand Point Way, along with the sidewalk and bike lane, will be closed in the work area whenever crews are present. These closures will take place from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily. Pedestrians should cross to the west side of Sand Point Way in a designated crosswalk to avoid the closure; when walking through the area after work hours, please use caution. The Metro bus stop will be closed from Oct. 22 to Oct. 31 but will then reopen.

Normal levels of construction noise will be generated by this project from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27. A flagger will be present during whenever construction crews are on site.

Existing Shuttle Hub Canopy to Be Relocated, Oct. 15 to Oct. 20

As part of the work to modify the Emergency Department (ED) drop-off in preparation for Building Care construction, the existing canopy at the former shuttle hub (located near the ED parking lot) will be relocated to the west side of the Friends of Costco Building (also known as Forest A).

Preparation for the canopy move will take place from Monday, Oct. 15 to Friday, Oct. 19 and will include grinding and sawing. Then, on Saturday, Oct. 20, crews will move the canopy using a crane and two trucks with counterweights.

Vehicular and pedestrian access to the ED will remain open during this project, although the existing ED driveway and the pedestrian walkway from 40th Avenue will be blocked for approximately 30 minutes on Oct. 20 while the canopy is moved. Flaggers will assist with traffic control. Construction noise associated with this project will be generated from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 15 to Oct. 19, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20.

Helicopter Test Flights at Hospital, Oct. 4 and Oct. 5

To prepare for construction of Building Care at the hospital campus, the existing helicopter landing pad (helistop) will be relocated to the top of the Friends of Costco Building (also known as Forest A).

During the first week of October, Airlift Northwest will conduct two test flights to the new helistop location. These test flights will include both landing and takeoff, along with simulation work by Seattle Children’s personnel on the rooftop. In order to receive final approval for the new helistop, one of the test flights must take place at night. The flights will occur on the following dates and times:

  • Thursday, Oct. 4 at 10 p.m.
  • Friday, Oct. 5 at noon

The test flights will generate noise as the helicopter lands and takes off.

If everything goes according to plan, the new helistop location on the Forest A rooftop will be activated on Oct. 17 and will be used until Building Care opens in 2022.

Asphalt Installation in Lot 4 at Hospital Sept. 27 and Sept. 28

In addition to the pavement sealing and restriping discussed in the Sept. 18 Construction Blog post, crews will also install new asphalt in a portion of Lot 4 (workforce member parking) on Sept. 27 and Sept. 28. The asphalt installation will generate some odor and noise between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on those days. This work is weather-dependent, so the dates are subject to change. Contact [email protected] with questions.

Sealing and Restriping in Lot 4 at Hospital Sept. 28 to Oct. 8

Beginning Friday, Sept. 28, crews will begin sealing and restriping portions of Lot 4 (workforce member parking). This work will generate some odor and will be conducted Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. We expect to complete this project on Monday, Oct. 8, though the work could last longer depending on weather. Contact [email protected] with questions.

Painting Work on Hospital Rooftop Sept. 18 and Sept. 19

On Sept. 18 and Sept. 19, crews will add paint striping on the rooftop of the Friends of Costco Building (also known as Forest A), which will create some odor. Fans will be used to help dissipate the smell. This work will occur from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Please email [email protected] or call 206-987-8000 with questions.

Monument Sign Installation Sept. 24 in Lot 4 at Hospital

On Monday, Sept. 24, crews will excavate for a monument sign within Lot 4 at the hospital campus. The excavation, which includes drilling and use of a vacuum truck, will create noise for approximately two hours that day within the standard work window of 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Please email [email protected] or call 206-987-8000 if you have questions.

Strike Resolved — Construction to Resume Sept. 10

The labor dispute between the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 302 and the Associated General Contractors of Washington has been resolved. Seattle Children’s projects that have been delayed by the strike will resume Monday, Sept. 10.

At the hospital, the following work is planned for the week of Sept. 10:

  • Construction of the new Emergency Department (ED) driveway to 40th Avenue, just south of the existing ED driveway. A portion of the sidewalk on the east side of the street will be closed, and no parking will be allowed on either side of 40th Avenue. Signs will be posted for parking closures. The Metro route 65 bus stop will remain open. A temporary walkway will be marked to route pedestrians around the closure. Flaggers will assist with pedestrian and traffic control. We expect this work to be completed by Sept. 15.
  • Removal of the island in the existing ED driveway. The old landscaped island will be paved over. The existing ED driveway will remain open during this work, though flaggers will assist with pedestrian and traffic control. Installation of new asphalt paving will generate some odor. We expect this work to be completed by Sept. 15.
  • Demolition and installation of underground utilities between the hospital and 40th Avenue. This work will take place within the area that has already been fenced off. All building entrances will remain open. This phase of work is expected to last through the end of September.

Construction noise will be generated from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays. Call 206-987-8000 or email [email protected] with questions.

Tree Removal at Hospital, Sept. 17 to Sept. 19; Parking Restrictions Sept. 17
