Work Taking Place Along West Side of Seattle Children’s Starting Oct. 16; Significant Noise Expected

Starting Monday, Oct. 16, work will take place along the west side of the River zone at Seattle Children’s hospital campus. This is part of the prep work needed for upcoming construction of Building Care (the Forest B zone) which is scheduled to begin fall 2018.

Work will take place on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and is expected to last for 10 to 15 business days. It involves saw-cutting the walkway slab and using a vacuum truck to remove dirt and debris; both activities will result in significant noise. Everything will be done to complete work as quickly and with as little disruption to patients, their families and neighbors as possible. For questions or concerns please email construction@seattlechildrens.org. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience.

Dr. Jeff Sperring Climbs Building Cure Tower Crane

Dr. Jeff Sperring, Seattle Children’s chief executive officer, climbed to the top of the Building Cure tower crane on Aug. 23, 2017, to survey construction progress. Located in downtown Seattle at the corner of Stewart Street and Terry Avenue, Building Cure will expand the Seattle Children’s Research Institute campus to help us accomplish more life-changing research that transforms the lives of children and their families.

Work on the Ocean 8 Parking Lot to Begin Sept. 5

Starting Sept. 5, resurfacing work will begin on the Ocean 8 parking lot at Seattle Children’s hospital campus. Work is expected to take about eight weeks, weather permitting, and will occur seven days a week: Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

There will be intermittent noise from compressors, and from equipment used to remove metal structures and the existing top coating of the surface lot; there may be some odor during application of the new top coating and parking lot striping as well. Contractors will do everything possible to mitigate odors or noise. Thank you for your patience as we work to complete this project as quickly as possible. For questions or concerns, email construction@seattlechildrens.org.

Building Cure Early Morning Site Activities the Week of July 3

Large concrete pump trucks will be staged at the Building Cure site in downtown Seattle the afternoon of July 5 to prepare for foundation placement beginning July 6 at 2 a.m. Concrete trucks are expected between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. to pour about 1,000 cubic yards of concrete into the foundation before rush hour. Trucks will enter the site from Stewart Street and exit on Virginia Street. Please pay close attention to flaggers and signage during these activities.

Building Cure will erect its second tower crane on Saturday, July 8. A noise variance is issued for work to begin at 3:30 a.m. Beginning at 7 a.m., tower crane segments will be laid out and stacked into place from the project laydown yard. Two police officers will be onsite to direct traffic. We do not anticipate impacts to pedestrian or vehicular traffic while the tower crane is erected, aside from brief stops to allow loads to enter the jobsite.

The tower crane will be in place for about 16 months and will be used to move materials like formwork for the structure, reinforcing steel, equipment, job boxes for the crews, and other construction support items and activities.

Improvements to Path Between 44th Ave. NE and Seattle Children’s Campus Begin July 5

To improve safety, and as part of Seattle Children’s Major Institution Master Plan (MIMP), construction will begin on a new path connecting Seattle Children’s campus to 44th Ave. NE. It will take about four weeks to complete. During construction there will be some trucks parked nearby, for the shortest time possible to perform necessary work; construction will only take place between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on weekdays. As much as possible, parking and construction will take place on Seattle Children’s property. The existing path will remain until the new one is constructed. Thank you for your patience as we improve pedestrian safety on and around our campus! If you have questions or concerns, please email construction@seattlechildrens.org.

External Drilling on West Side of Seattle Children’s Campus Starting July 5

Starting Wednesday, July 5, a private geotechnical company will drill six large holes at different locations on the west side of the Seattle Children’s campus to take soil samples. Each drilling will take about a day to complete. They will bring in a large drill rig to complete the work, and there will be some noise and possible vibration. If you have questions or concerns, please email construction@seattlechildrens.org.

Tower Crane to Be Installed at Building Cure Site on June 18

Building Cure will get its first tower crane on Sunday, June 18. A noise variance was issued for work to begin at 3 a.m., when large excavators and heavy equipment will be removed. Beginning at 7 a.m., tower crane segments will be laid out and stacked into place. Two police officers will be onsite directing traffic. We do not anticipate impacts to pedestrian or vehicular traffic while the tower crane is erected, aside from brief stops to allow loads to enter the jobsite.

The tower crane will be in place for about 14 months and will be used to move materials like formwork for the structure, reinforcing steel, equipment, job boxes for the crews, and other construction support items and activities.

Building Cure Excavation Close to ‘Bottoming Out’

The Building Cure team is making big progress in our excavation activities for the below-grade spaces. About 75% of the total material has been removed. We anticipate a mid-June “bottoming out,” where we reach the elevation for the top of foundations. We’ll then begin excavation activities for each of the foundations. Given the lower volume of material removed for structural excavation work, we’ll be able to transition from night hauling to intermittent day hauling. During day hauling, flaggers will be posted at the entrance and exit to the job site to ensure pedestrian safety as trucks enter and exit the job site. Please follow all sidewalk closure signs and periodic instructions by the flaggers. They are there for your safety!
