On Tuesday, Dec. 12 and Wednesday, Dec. 13, a private geotechnical company will drill some large holes at different locations in the River parking lot on the Seattle Children’s campus to take soil samples. Each drilling will take about a day to complete, and work will take place between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. They will bring in a large drill rig to complete the work, and there will be some noise and possible vibration during morning hours only. The upcoming Forest B expansion has a name: Building Care. You may recall that Forest A was named “Building Hope,” and our newest research building downtown is “Building Cure.” Groundbreaking for Building Care is scheduled for fall 2018, with anticipated completion in 2021. As the demand for Seattle Children’s services continues to grow, we need additional space to adequately care for our patients and families. Building Care will help us meet many of those needs. Large vehicles will enter and exit the hospital campus along Sand Point Way; we do not anticipate impacts to traffic. Starting Monday, Oct. 16, work will take place along the west side of the River zone at Seattle Children’s hospital campus. This is part of the prep work needed for upcoming construction of Building Care (the Forest B zone) which is scheduled to begin fall 2018.
Work will take place on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and is expected to last for 10 to 15 business days. It involves saw-cutting the walkway slab and using a vacuum truck to remove dirt and debris; both activities will result in significant noise. Dr. Jeff Sperring, Seattle Children’s chief executive officer, climbed to the top of the Building Cure tower crane on Aug. 23, 2017, to survey construction progress. Located in downtown Seattle at the corner of Stewart Street and Terry Avenue, Building Cure will expand the Seattle Children’s Research Institute campus to help us accomplish more life-changing research that transforms the lives of children and their families.
Starting Sept. 5, resurfacing work will begin on the Ocean 8 parking lot at Seattle Children’s hospital campus. Work is expected to take about eight weeks, weather permitting, and will occur seven days a week: Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
There will be intermittent noise from compressors, and from equipment used to remove metal structures and the existing top coating of the surface lot; there may be some odor during application of the new top coating and parking lot striping as well. Concrete trucks are expected between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m., allowing approximately 1,000 cubic yards of concrete to be placed into the foundation before rush hour. Large concrete pump trucks will be staged at the Building Cure site in downtown Seattle the afternoon of July 5 to prepare for foundation placement beginning July 6 at 2 a.m. Concrete trucks are expected between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. to pour about 1,000 cubic yards of concrete into the foundation before rush hour. Trucks will enter the site from Stewart Street and exit on Virginia Street. Please pay close attention to flaggers and signage during these activities.
Building Cure will erect its second tower crane on Saturday, July 8. A noise variance is issued for work to begin at 3:30 a.m. Beginning at 7 a.m., tower crane segments will be laid out and stacked into place from the project laydown yard. Two police officers will be onsite to direct traffic. We do not anticipate impacts to pedestrian or vehicular traffic while the tower crane is erected, aside from brief stops to allow loads to enter the jobsite.
The tower crane will be in place for about 16 months and will be used to move materials like formwork for the structure, reinforcing steel, equipment, job boxes for the crews, and other construction support items and activities.
