Sidewalk Closure Near Shuttle Loading Zone at Main Campus

Due to the Building Hope construction on the west side of Helen Lane, the sidewalk is closed from the shuttle loading zone to Penny Drive. Pedestrians should use the new east sidewalk to enter or leave Giraffe Circle by walking in front of the short-term/accessible parking stalls. To avoid confusion and for your safety, please stay on the new sidewalk and do not walk in the street on Helen Lane. To ease congestion, the Giraffe Circle should be limited to shuttles and patient families only. All others should use the Airplane or Whale entrances at all times. Construction is scheduled to be completed by Sept. 21.

Construction Fence Coming Down

We’re beginning to remove Building Hope’s plywood construction fence and replace it with chain link fencing. The new fencing will sit closer to the sidewalk so grading and landscaping can begin. We’re storing the panels from the old fence for future projects. With the plywood panels gone, the construction site is more visible – and more of a distraction. Please be careful when walking and driving around the site.

Hartmann Makeover Makes Progress

Extreme Makeover: Hartmann Building Frontage Edition is rolling. The hardscape portion of the project – a new sidewalk, curbs, gutters, drive aprons and rock wall – should be complete by the second week of September.

Look for landscaping work to start the first week of September. This includes prepping the soil, installing sprinklers and planting – or in many cases replanting –  trees, shrubs and other vegetation.  Some of the plants were salvaged from the Hartmann frontage before the makeover began. Others were salvaged from the Laurelon Terrace site or propagated elsewhere on our campus.  Read full post »

Building Hope Includes Taming Traffic

Our Inside the Walls of Building Hope series wouldn’t be complete without mentioning our Livable Streets initiative. Besides improving traffic flow around the hospital, the initiative will make the neighborhood more walkable and bikeable, providing healthy alternatives to driving that will help people stay active and reduce pollution. Gas Work at Main Campus Entrance

On Wednesday, Aug. 8 and Thursday, Aug. 9 crews from Puget Sound Energy will continue installing a new gas line along Sand Point Way. Part of this work involves a new line up Penny Drive to serve Children’s. This week, they will bring the gas line farther up Penny Drive. Traffic will not be blocked, but drivers should be very careful on this busy driveway.

Street Improvement Work

Sellen crews have relocated the site fencing at the corner of 40th Ave. NE and 45th St. to begin work on the southwest entrance to the Building Hope loading dock.  This work will progress up 40th Ave. NE to Sand Point Way NE and will involve heavy equipment to remove sections of sidewalk and concrete trucks to place the new driveway concrete.

Following the work along 40th Ave. NE the same type of work will move across Sand Point Way NE to the Hartmann frontage, and then eventually back to the hospital side of Sand Point Way NE along that street from 40th Ave. NE to Penny Drive.

Work Begins Soon on Hartmann Frontage

Work will begin in late July to improve the frontage of the Hartmann Building along Sand Point Way NE. The month-long project includes building a new sidewalk, curbs and gutters, replacing existing landscaping, and constructing a new retaining wall.  Flaggers will direct traffic when the work involves the Hartmann Building’s driveways.   Read full post »

Up With The New, Down With The Old

Two of our large interior elevators are now operational and ready to transport workers and materials.  As construction moves inside Building Hope and workers begin using the permanent elevators, we will no longer need the exterior manlifts.  These will be coming down during the week of July 23rd.

Inside the Walls of Building Hope

It was easy to observe progress on our Building Hope expansion during the first year of construction because the work was highly visible. That changed after we completed the exterior of the structure. Now, most of the work is occurring inside the stone, glass and metal walls of the building. Read full post »
