Electrical Work Beginning Saturday, May 12

Seattle City Light crews will work this Saturday, May 12, to complete new underground electrical connections for our Building Hope expansion. Activity will continue intermittently throughout the following week, including some evening work on Monday, May 14, and Thursday, May 17. The weekend and evening work is necessary to accommodate the busy schedule of Seattle City Light’s underground crews. The work will be quiet and confined to the Plaza fire lane.

The Scoop on All That Dirt

As you may have noticed, digging the foundation for our Building Hope expansion created a mountain of dirt at the north end of the site. We excavated 70,000 cubic yards of earth – enough to fill more than 20 Olympic-size swimming pools. How do we plan to get rid of all that dirt?  We don’t. Read full post »

Saturday Work Expected

It’s rare, but there are times when contractors must complete certain tasks on weekends to avert safety concerns, avoid disrupting the regular work week and keep our Building Hope expansion project on schedule.

On Saturday, May 5th, 10 to 15 people will be working quietly inside the building from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. to meet an OSHA requirement related to the construction power supply. The only visible sign of work will be the operation of the external elevator on the north side of the building.

The Fraco Lifts are Coming Down

The Fraco lifts that provided workers with platforms to install the stone, metal and glass that clads our Building Hope expansion are being disassembled as exterior building construction winds down. The process started this week and is expected to last about a month. Attached to tall masts, the Fraco lifts help workers safely move up and down the building and also allows them to move side-to-side.  Fraco lifts have become a popular alternative to traditional scaffolding because they’re safer and more efficient.

The Construction Trailers are Setting Sail

The modular building and fleet of trailers stationed on the north side of the Building Hope expansion are pulling up anchor. The collection of temporary construction facilities is regrouping on the south side of the building over the next week or two. The facilities will remain there for the duration of the project. Work Near Whale Garage Starting Monday, April 30

You may notice a truck and trailer parked at the east end of the fire lane for the Whale Garage starting Monday, April 30. The rig will be there a few days while a contractor runs communication cable along Northeast 45th Street between the garage and the Building Hope expansion. Crews will be present throughout each work day, but the project will not conflict with access to the garage or the bus stops along 45th. In addition, the truck will not be left unattended so it can be moved in case of emergency.

Steel, Glass, Stone and Tile

As contractors rapidly cover steel beams in a cladding of stone, metal and glass, it’s exciting to see how this combination of exterior materials is bringing our Building Hope expansion to life.

The number one goal for the design is to fit in – with existing Seattle Children’s buildings, with the surrounding landscape and with the neighborhood. Yet the design is also meant to be distinctive and incorporate playful touches befitting a children’s hospital. Read full post »

Fence Remodel and Landscaping Work along NE 45th Street Taking Place Monday, April 9

On Monday, April 9, some work will be taking place along NE 45th Street adjacent to the Building Hope construction site. Work includes opening up part of the fence on the east side to remove the brick wall and grade the area, which should be complete by end-of-day Monday. On Tuesday, crews will perform work to tie into the storm drain. They anticipate having the work complete by the end of the week, including sidewalk and fence replacement.

Sellen will have people in place to assist pedestrians around the work area. After hours, the work area will be covered, temporary fencing will be in place and the area will be secured for pedestrians.

Although the work will not impact street traffic, activities will be visible from NE 45th Street.

Building Interior Work

The work on the exterior of Seattle Children’s Building Hope expansion is clearly visible, but an enormous amount of work is taking place inside the new building too!

Crews are working hard to install the metal stud-framed walls that make up most of the interior partitions, as seen in this photo. They are also installing fire sprinklers on all floors, and running duct work for air handling units and conduit for all the power and lighting systems. Read full post »

Ground Covers, Grasses and Trees… Oh My!

Last week we shared how Seattle Children’s is incorporating green roofs into the new Building Hope expansion.  But there’s also a lot of green that will make its way back to the ground around the new expansion in the coming months.

Before the construction site was cleared, over 4,000 plants were saved so they could be replanted around the new expansion. They’ve been lovingly cared for by Children’s Grounds Maintenance team. Read full post »
