Building Hope is first and foremost a place of healing, but it’s also a canvas for artists to help us create a comforting and welcoming environment. As workers begin to put the finishing touches on the building, we’re pleased to share another example of the art featured throughout the facility.
Lab Partners of Oakland, California designed a series of wall murals for the elevator banks on each floor. The soothing scenes in their woodland designs take their cue from our new wayfinding system that divides our campus into four nature-inspired zones. Building Hope is in the Forest Zone.

Motorists will encounter intermittent lane closures on Friday, Nov. 16, and Monday, Nov. 19, on northbound Sand Point Way NE approaching Penny Drive. A crew will be cutting the roadway and installing detectors that alert the traffic signal a vehicle is present in the left turn lane so the light will change. Although the work will restrict traffic, the road will remain open throughout the project.
Cutting will take place Friday. The left turn lane on Sand Point Way NE will be closed from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. The inside lane will be closed from 12-2 p.m. and traffic will be diverted to the curb lane. The curb lane will be closed from 2-4 p.m. and traffic will be diverted to the inside lane. The detectors will be installed Monday. Lane closures will occur in the same progression as on Friday, but for shorter durations.
A police officer will be present both days to assist motorists when the left turn lane is closed and provide other help as needed. We appreciate your patience as we improve traffic safety and flow around our campus.

Children leave a lot behind when they come to the hospital – school, friends and activities. Time drags and they feel bored and isolated. They and their families also have lots of questions about what to expect during their stay. GetWell Town is an interactive media system that uses the bedside TV to inform, educate and entertain patients and their families at the hospital. And it’s coming to Building Hope when the doors open this spring. Read full post »
Brrrrr! It’s getting cold outside, Waldo fans, but I just bundle up and keep on trucking because there’s too much to see to stay inside. The other day I watched workers pour the concrete for a new landing place for helicopters.
Most kids come to Seattle Children’s with their parents. Others come in ambulances. A few who are very, very sick or badly hurt come by helicopter because they’re far away and need to get here as soon as possible.
The new landing place – called a helistop – is near the new building that’s under construction. When the new building is finished, the emergency department will move in the first floor. The emergency department is where kids go when they need help right away. The new helipad and a special walkway will make it easy for kids to be taken from the helicopter straight to the new emergency department. Read full post »
Bike and pedestrian improvements are front and center in our Livable Streets Initiative – a $4 million plan to make Northeast Seattle a safer and more convenient place to travel for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists alike. Two examples are a new sidewalk we completed on the north side of NE 50th Street and a cycletrack we’re building on the east side of Sand Point Way NE. Read full post »
Street improvement work at the corner of Sand Point Way and Penny Drive will take place the week of Nov. 5. Work includes portions of a new curb, sidewalk and cycle path. Although vehicle traffic should not be impacted, the wheelchair ramp to Helen Lane will be closed Monday, Nov. 5 and Tuesday, Nov. 6. Security personnel will be onsite to help direct pedestrian traffic and assist people in wheelchairs, as needed.

Say goodbye to the cracks in the road on 40th Avenue NE between NE 45th Street and Sand Point Way NE. Workers will begin replacing old concrete street panels on Monday, Nov. 3. The work will last a week. Flaggers and traffic control staff will guide vehicles through the work zone. We appreciate your patience.

The wettest, slickest, darkest days of the year are ahead. And they won’t end anytime soon. Be extra cautious when driving, walking or cycling near the Building Hope construction site. With a snip and a snack, Seattle Children’s, the city of Seattle and the Wedgwood community christened the new greenway along 39th Avenue NE on Friday, Oct. 26. After the ribbon was cut and donuts served (thanks, Top Pot!), neighbors formed a bike train and rode up the greenway to Thornton Creek Elementary School. Greenways are residential streets where traffic moves at slower speeds and people feel safer and more comfortable walking and biking. Seattle Children’s funded the improvements needed to create the 39th Avenue greenway through our Livable Streets Initiative. We’re replacing the Balloon Building’s roof. Work begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27., when a crane will lift materials onto the roof. The crane, which will be set up in the dietary courtyard, will be removed by the end of the day. Replacing the roof and exterior HVAC ducts will take about three weeks, weather permitting.
