Pedestrian Route Changes Around Building Hope Construction Site

Sellen Construction and their subcontractors are making improvements along Sand Point Way, including new sidewalks and a new water main. This will impact pedestrians walking along the west side of campus; work is expected to take place over the next several weeks.

Please use this revised walking route from Springbrook, Hartmann, and other points south:

  • Rather than taking Sand Point Way to the main campus, walk east up NE 45th Street to the fire lane, which is just east of the construction site
  • Walk north up the fire lane (stay on the existing hospital building side of the cyclone construction fence)
  • Take the stairs at the north end of the fire lane to the Giraffe entrance
  • To return, reverse the route

For those who cannot walk up stairs, please talk to the Sellen on-site flaggers for an escort.

Thank you for your patience and flexibility as we continue to improve the Children’s campus.

Hartmann News: Water to be Shut Off, Construction Completed

Seattle Public Utilities will shut off the water supply to the Hartmann Building starting at 7 p.m. on Sept. 18 to work on the water main. The building will be without running water for less than 10 hours, but during that time, there will be no water for restrooms or any other use. Read full post »

Parking Lot Painting Hinges on Weather

We plan to re-stripe two parking lots sometime during the next six to eight weekends starting Sept. 22-23, but the exact schedule is dependent on the weather. We may not know when work will occur until the day before.

The lots are the Magnuson Park lot on NE 65th Street and Sand Point Way NE, the Administration Building lot at NE 70th Street and Sand Point Way NE. Each lot should take no more than one day to finish. Work will be confined to the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Pharmacy Drive-Up Closed Until Monday

The pharmacy drive-up lane in the Hartmann Building parking lot will be closed Friday, Sept. 14, so our contractor can pave the lot’s southwest entry. A crew will work Saturday, Sept. 15, to prepare the parking lot for full re-opening – including the pharmacy drive-up and both entries – on Monday, Sept. 17. The work is part of the improvements we’re making to the Hartmann Building frontage on Sand Point Way.

Orange (But Not For Long) Structure Will House Elevator

You may be scratching your head at the unusual orange structure rising from the Building Hope construction site. The structure will house a new site elevator. The elevator will transport people between Building Hope’s inpatient parking area and the existing Giraffe entrance – the front door to the entire hospital. We expect to finish work by the end of October – including covering the current orange exterior with the same zinc panels used on the Building Hope exterior.

Introducing PICU East

As we complete the skybridge connecting our Building Hope expansion to rest of the hospital, certain spaces in the existing building must temporarily close as the skybridge is punched through on five levels. That includes part of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) containing seven beds. The problem is we can’t take so many beds out of service – not even temporarily – because the entire region depends on the PICU to care for kids who are fighting for their lives. The solution: move six beds into a new area dubbed PICU East. Read full post »

Entry To Hartmann Parking Lot Switches

Starting Monday, Sept. 10, at 8:30 a.m., vehicles will enter the Hartmann Building parking lot through the northeast driveway, which had been closed. The southwest driveway will then close and re-open on Monday, Sept. 17. We needed to temporarily close each of the two driveways to complete paving work as we improve the Hartmann Building’s frontage along Sand Point Way with a new sidewalk, retaining wall and landscaping.

Flaggers will continue to assist drivers and keep the area safe for patients, visitors and staff during construction. In addition, the contractor has created a route to accommodate pharmacy customers using the drive-up window. We appreciate your patience during this project.

Waldo Shares Back to School Advice

Lunch box? Check. Backpack? Check. Paper, ruler, pencils and pens? Check, check, check, check. It’s back to school time, Waldo fans!

My friend Brian Ross knows a lot about how to get ready for school and about all the things Children’s does to help kids learn while they’re in the hospital. Brian is the educational services manager at Children’s. That’s kind of like being the principal. Read full post »

Sidewalk Closure Near Shuttle Loading Zone at Main Campus

Due to the Building Hope construction on the west side of Helen Lane, the sidewalk is closed from the shuttle loading zone to Penny Drive. Pedestrians should use the new east sidewalk to enter or leave Giraffe Circle by walking in front of the short-term/accessible parking stalls. To avoid confusion and for your safety, please stay on the new sidewalk and do not walk in the street on Helen Lane. To ease congestion, the Giraffe Circle should be limited to shuttles and patient families only. All others should use the Airplane or Whale entrances at all times. Construction is scheduled to be completed by Sept. 21.
