Crane to Be Used at Hospital Campus March 30

On Saturday, March 30, a large crane will be delivered to the hospital campus at 8 a.m. and used to remove a temporary generator located near the Mountain building. Large vehicles associated with the crane delivery will enter and exit the hospital campus via Penny Drive at Sand Point Way NE; we do not anticipate impacts to traffic on Sand Point Way. Normal construction noise levels are expected. The crane will be removed from the site by the end of the day.

Please note this work is separate from Building Care, which uses its own crane.

For questions or concerns, please call the construction pager at 206-469-5860. Thank you for your patience.

Wood-Chipping March 26 at Hospital

Upcoming Building Care Construction Activities: April 1 to April 7

Building Care construction is underway. From now until building opening in Spring 2022, there will be ongoing construction activity at the hospital campus. Seattle Children’s will publish a weekly post on this Construction Blog that outlines the work expected to occur the following week. We will also post to this blog whenever a construction activity will be especially impactful to neighbors.

From April 1 to April 7, construction crews are scheduled to perform the following activities:

  • Load out current crane from site and load in new crane
  • Excavation
  • Install tie backs/anchors for retaining walls
  • Form concrete slab on grade and wall
  • Internal activities on L1 of Forest A (Friends of Costco Building): core drilling; install pipes, seismic restraints, firestops and hangers for multiple systems; install new pipe pathways; remove infection prevention barrier

The work to load out the current crane and load in the new crane will begin at 5 a.m. on Friday, April 5. The loading and unloading will take place within an existing no parking zone on 40th Avenue NE between NE 45th Street and Sand Point Way NE. This work is occurring early to minimize traffic impacts from the oversize load.

Construction noise will be generated throughout the week. The noisiest external work will be the crane load-out and load-in the morning of April 5 and installing tie backs/anchors, which will take place all week. The noisiest internal work will be the core drilling and installing new pipe pathways.

Expect heavy truck traffic as excavated soil is hauled away from the site. Construction activity is weather-dependent and subject to change based on conditions.

All work (other than the crane load-out and load-in discussed above) will take place within standard construction hours: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Please call 206-987-8000 or email [email protected] with questions.

Vegetation Pruning and Removal Along 45th Avenue on March 29

On Friday, March 29, Bartlett Tree Experts will prune and remove some dying arborvitaes along 45th Avenue NE. Chainsaws and chippers will be used, which will generate noise. The work will begin at 9 a.m. and is expected to last until 3 p.m.

Water Flow Test on March 11

On Monday, March 11, crews will perform a water flow test at the hospital. For approximately 30 minutes, a large amount of water will be discharged from test ports on the south side of Forest A (the Friends of Costco Building). Most of the water will drain into catch basins on Seattle Children’s property, but some will likely drain into the stormwater system on 40th Avenue NE as well. If you see water draining from the hospital that day, there is no need to be alarmed — this is a planned and controlled test.

Sidewalk Closure on Stewart Street, Between Boren and Terry Avenues, Begins March 4

Beginning Monday, March 4, the sidewalk on the north side of Stewart Street from Boren Avenue to Terry Avenue will be closed to pedestrian access to construct new sidewalks, planters and driveways; the closure is expected to last through April 15. The parking lane adjacent to the sidewalk will also have intermittent closures to support access to the work. Please follow all street and sidewalk closed signs and pedestrian diversions as they are in place for your safety during these activities.

Pavement Striping at Hospital Campus, March 9

On Saturday, March 9, crews are scheduled to paint new pavement striping along portions of Penny Drive and Helen Lane at the hospital campus. The work will be performed in three phases throughout the day and will temporarily close some crosswalks on those two streets at various times. The parking stalls on the east side of Helen Lane will be closed all day. Both Penny Drive and Helen Lane will remain open during the striping work; flaggers will assist with traffic control.

Crews will begin preparation work at 8 a.m. Striping will begin at 9 a.m. and is expected to last until 5 p.m. Minor levels of noise will be generated, and the paint will produce some odor.

This work is weather-dependent and subject to change based on conditions. Please call 206-987-8000 or email [email protected] with questions.
