Forest Zone Construction Update: Oct. 24 to Nov. 20

Over the next few weeks, the following construction projects will occur at Seattle Children’s as we continue to improve our facilities for our patients.

  • Saturday, Oct. 24 from 8:05 a.m. to 4 p.m.: The new kitchen construction team will use a conveyor to move materials between the end of the Forest building and 40th Avenue NE every 30 minutes or so. No trucks will be present and there will be minimal noise from this work.
  • Monday, Nov. 2 to Thursday, Nov. 5: A construction crane placed near the Emergency Department ambulance bay will be used to lift mechanical units into the Forest building. The work will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the crane may impact traffic slightly as it enters and exits 40th Avenue NE. There will be 2-3 parking spaces unavailable on the west side of 40th Avenue NE from Nov. 3 through Nov. 4. Minimal noise is expected as this work is completed.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 17 and Friday, Nov. 20 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.: Cement will be pumped into level one of the Forest zone to create the floor for the new kitchen. A cement pump truck and cement truck will be present off 40th Avenue NE near the Forest building. There will be significant noise while the cement is pumped.

Scaffolding Removal and PBMU Play Yard and Porch Construction Update

On Saturday, Oct. 10 and Sunday, Oct. 11, scaffolding will be removed from the rooftop generator stacks on the Mountain zone. There will be minimal noise as this scaffolding is removed.

On Monday, Oct. 12, a truckload of steel for the new Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine Unit (PBMU) play yard and porch will be delivered to Children’s via to the hospital entrance on NE 45th St. A mobile crane will be on-site to unload the steel into the play yard. This work will occur after 8 a.m. on Monday morning.

In addition, there will be intermittent drilling between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. during the week of Monday, Oct. 12. The drilling will take place on the south side exterior of the building, between the River and Mountain zones.

Mountain and Ocean Zone Painting This Weekend

As an update to our post on Sept. 25 regarding scaffolding installation in the Mountain zone, additional work will be completed in this area on Saturday, Oct. 5. The chimney stacks on the roof of the Mountain zone will be painted and the scaffolding will remain in place as this work is completed. In addition, the exterior of the Ocean zone will be painted. Scaffolding Installation On Saturday, September 26

On Saturday, September 26, scaffolding will be installed around the three large rooftop chimney stacks in the Mountain zone. This work will be done in preparation for the repair and painting of the chimney stacks. There will be minimal noise as the scaffolding is installed and no work will be done on Sunday, September 27.

Roofing repairs will also occur in the same area over the next two weeks; this repair work may extend into the weekend due to weather conditions and there will be minimal noise due to this work. Ocean 8 Parking Garage and Forest Shuttle Hub Painting This Weekend

Weather permitting, the Ocean 8 parking garage and the Forest Shuttle Hub will be painted this Saturday, Sept. 19, and Sunday, Sept. 20. The work is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. and end late in the afternoon, depending on weather and other factors.

Expect delays at main campus parking lots during this period, and please allow extra travel time. Security and Transportation staff will be onsite to help direct traffic.

PBMU Play Yard and Porch Construction Update

playyard 1As an update to our post on July 30 regarding the new Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine Unit (PBMU) play yard and porch, the play yard concrete demolition will be complete today, Wednesday, Aug. 19. The second phase of construction for the new play yard and porch begins Thursday, Sept. 3.

On both Thursday, Sept. 3 and Wednesday, Sept. 9, concrete pouring will occur in two to four hour segments between 8:10 a.m. and 12:10 p.m. This work will result in Read full post »


Plant Removal to Begin Next Week as Construction Starts on New Kitchen

IMG_7101Starting next week, the Seattle Children’s Grounds Department will begin removing most of the plants between the Forest Building and 40th Avenue NE, directly adjacent to the Emergency Department drive, as construction begins to create a new kitchen on Forest level L1.

Two trees will also be removed in the next few weeks and replanted by the bike share bicycles near Sand Point Way NE. Some landscaping will remain along the public sidewalk near the construction area.

PBMU Play Yard and Porch Construction Starts Aug. 3

PBMU Play Yard and PorchSeattle Children’s will start construction on a new play yard and porch for its Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine Unit (PBMU) on Aug. 3. The project is expected to wrap up in early December.

In the first phase, the existing play yard slab will be demolished and the water barrier restored. To minimize noise, workers will use concrete saws to remove the slab. A large tent will enclose the work area to contain dust and to prevent water from entering the building while the ground is exposed. Read full post »


Updates on Space in the Forest Zone

Pediatric Intensive Care UnitOn June 28, the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) completed its move to a 16-bed unit on level 5 of the Forest zone. There are now a total of 32 PICU beds, 16 on Forest 5 and 16 on Forest 6.

Next, we are planning for the August 30 move of Medical Unit beds to Forest level 4. When the move is complete, we’ll have a total of 48 Medical Unit beds, 32 on Forest 4, and 16 on Forest 5.

After last weekend’s PICU move, Seattle Children’s now has 371 licensed beds, with 314 beds in operation. After the Medical Unit move is complete, 313 beds will be in operation.

Vacuum Truck Onsite Tuesday, June 30; Minimal Noise Near Children’s Ambulance Bay Expected

On Tuesday, June 30 starting at 8 a.m., a vacuum truck will be onsite to help with soil work near 40th Ave. NE.
